MDC Men’s Basketball Uses the Offseason to Become a Fast Tempo Team

Inside the Gibson Center Gymnasium, the Miami Dade College men’s basketball team is using their time during the offseason to train. While building chemistry with one another, the Sharks Head Coach Kevin Ledoux is making sure MDC’s practices comprises of drills, and exercises that will prepare his players for a fast tempo this upcoming season. During Thursday’s practice Ledoux made sure his players understood how important being in-condition will be.

During the beginning of the teams’ practice, Ledoux made the players run eight suicides timed. Following the suicides, the players did drills such as 5-On-O, and secondary break. Both drills help in the development of learning where to be during a fast break. In addition, they also help in conditioning players.

Like many college players, the Sharks are using this offseason to improve in an area that was not considered a strength before. Similar to offensive schemes that belonged to the 1989-90 Loyola University team, and the 2014 Golden State Warriors Ledoux plans for his team to be just as fast. He said one of their goals is “to be in better shape than any other team in the country.”

“The biggest thing is conditioning. Conditioning can win ball games or lose ball games. In our system being conditioned, and knowing where to be on each spot on the fast break is crucial,” Ledoux said.
