This is for all of the readers who went out and purchased the first issue of Sports for the Average.
Thank you for purchasing and taking the time to read the first issue of Sports for the Average. Sports for the Average is not your typical sports magazine. I created the magazine to allow readers to find stories they can relate to. The content found within these pages inform readers about sports topics and issues athletes deal with daily that the average person can relate to. Readers can find a little of themselves in each story.
Athletes are powerful, skilled, and graceful individuals. These traits athletes have are characteristics fans awe at, wish they had, and gravitate to. To some, the traits put athletes in a light that make them look like superheroes or people that have it all together. Sports for the Average reminds readers that although athletes have unique skill sets or may have a nice life (how it may seem from the outside looking in), athletes are ordinary people too and deal with the same daily struggles as everyone else.
Each feature in this issue tells the story of how an individual was involved in athletics and came to a point in their life where they had a decision to make that would impact their lives. In this month’s issue creator and former college football player Nick “KNG” Henry shares how he mustered up enough courage to leave his 9 to 5 and pursue a career for his passion of art; videographer Tommy Benavides reveals how getting suspended from three high school football games during his senior season jumpstarted his career in videography; and sports writer Mirin Fader explains how writing gave her the same feeling she got from playing basketball.
As the interviewer of each story selected for this month’s issue, it was my privilege and honor to write these individuals’ stories and share their thoughts, emotions, and passion with the world.
This issue will be the precedent for the issues to come for Sports for the Average. Currently, I am a one-man team, but I look forward to creating a team that conducts their work with the same values this magazine is built on: honesty, commitment, dedication, and fairness.
For my readers, I hope you are able to enjoy this issue and the issues that will come soon. I look forward to the journey that Sports for the Average takes us (you and I) and I can’t wait to see the growth.
